When collisions occur..
Posted by Pepper on September 14, 2011
I tend to space out a lot. I am *always* dreaming. Even as I type this, there is a parallel thought process running in my head. Mint always asks me the same question. “What are you always thinking about?”.
I don’t know. It is such a haphazard blend of thoughts, that I can’t get myself to give him a coherent answer.
I might be doing something, while thinking about something else all together. So one part of my brainΒ focusesΒ on the task at hand, while the other part caters to the other in built, bizarreΒ world that occupies my head. Β I would say my brain is like a two way street. I have to ensure that the opposing thoughts, though they are being driven simultaneously at high speed, do not collide.
But sometimes collisions do occur. Sometimes it happens because I am too exhausted and the signalling system runs out of power supply, thus disrupting mental traffic flow. Other times, there is a big jam in my head and I am unable to regulate the traffic. These are the times when I suffer from a complete, mental black out.
One such accident happened yesterday. I had to thread my eye brows and had an appointment with a lady who lives in our apartment complex. There were a lot of things going on in my mind as I walked up to her apartment. What should I cook for dinner? Oh, we’ve run out of cooking oil. Did I call back my aunt? Tomorrow is another working day. How I hate it. Remember to wish X on her birthday. What should we do this weekend? I miss home. I think this new shampoo suits my hair. Damn, I have to get my eye brows done now and undergo the same third degree torture.
It was too late by the time I realised what I had been doing. I was using my house keys and trying to open their door instead of ringing the bell. All along, I wondered why the damn door wasn’t opening. At some point, they must have heard somebody fumbling with the key at the door. The door I was so desperately trying to open suddenly swung open by an old man. That is when I realised what I had been doing.
I couldn’t think of any explanation to justify my actions, instead I burst out laughing without saying a word. I know. Must have been perfect. Psycho girl trying to openly break into their home and then laughing like a maniac when caught. The poor man seemed positively horrified. I commanded myself to “Behave!”, offered a lame explanation and a sincere apology.
I am sure the Police has put me on their list of suspects by now. I think my neighbours are living in high alert.

I know we all multi task all the time no?
I’ve tried opening silver Santros in Bombay too. The saving grace is that I haven’t had to confront the owner or give any explanation. Even if I had to, I think it sounds more forgivable cos the cars look just the same π
RS said
π Arent we all multi tasking all the time? Are you sleeping well with all the things to do?
My mind usually gets shut down by my own thoughts during some conversations and have been embarassed multiple times when Im asked some question and I have no clue what they are talking about!!

Same here. Lol.

Ha ha…I just couldnt stop laughing. Not because of what you did, it is funny how you described it.
Would it make you feel better if I say I have done the same thing not once but twice. Though not exactly same, the 2nd time was when I tried to open our house main door with my office cabinet key. When it didnt work, I called my husband frantically that I was unable to get in. Both the instances were during my pregnancy and I blamed the hormones for my forgetfulness.
Pepper said
Now what/who should I be blaming for this life long absentmindedness?

Ha ha funny one.

Such collisions happen all the time to me. I have seen them happen to a lot of people around me too. It happens when your mind is too full of thoughts, not one related to the other.
Just the other day, I was trying to swipe my office ID card over the lift buttons. I was wondering why the lift wasn’t coming down. π
Pepper said
Lol! That is extremely funny.. π

ROFL!!!! *insert yahoo rofl icon*
I actually imagined that and burst out laughing in office!!! π π Hyuk hyuk!!
If it is any consolation, I also have such daydreaming incidents most of the time. Often I am caught staring at people with a smile on my face….when the smile has only to do wtih pleasant thoughts in my head!! And many times I may not be looking at their faces at all – purely by accident of course *grin grin *
So don’t worry, you are not alone!! π
Pepper said
Of course I know I am not alone. That’s one reason I stopped myself from write the “Why me?” statement. Because I know it happens to each one of us π

you must be the most beautiful burglar pepper π
Pepper said
Eh, I don’t think I am beautiful at all, but okay fine, if you say so π
And how do you know those extraordinarily beautiful girls are not burglars? π

ROFL! This is hilarious!
My office is on the 3rd floor of our building — all other floors are occupied by Oracle. Once, lost in a million thoughts, I climbed up one more floor (yea, i always use the stairway π ), walked right across the oracle reception and tried to open their door using my access card. it beeped so loud, i jumped out of my reverie π
It took some time trying to explain why I was there. Bah! π
Pepper said
Lol! You’re the 3rd person talking about such adventures in office. I think that environment is what makes our brain cells go kaput π

I have had my share of ‘Blank’ or ‘Jammed’ moments…… and a couple of times i had them right in the morning.. i brushed my teeth with somebody’s else’s brush… and it was too late before i realised.. and had a yuck feeling through out the day….
Pepper said
Haha. You want to hear something much, much worse? I walked into the bathroom once, groggy eyed and brushed my teeth with the tooth brush my mom reserved for cleaning the basins and the sinks in our house. I considered suicide cos I just couldn’t live with what I had done.
Nikita said
yucks… seriously.. that was much worse.. reading that makes me feel pukish… Lets start being cautious of all our waking moments.. thats important to survive and to handle lives.. π
Pepper said
I know.. If only we could be cautious all the time … π

OMG! You are one special specimen Pepper ( as if you were not trying to convey that already )
Hahahaha! I can imagine the horrid look on the poor old man when he saw you laughing. You are still cute that way π
On a serious note – don’t despair. We all go through such embarrassing scenes one time or the other. I cannot give an ex right now, but conversational ‘collisions’ are normal with me when the listener will go – ‘wha..?!’ π
Pepper said
I am special? I thought this was normal π
Arey I am not despairing. I just wanted to record the incident on my blog.

Gawd! I thought i was the only one with this syndrome! Thanks for the company! I have tons to share but recent one was instead of applying toothpaste I applied fair& lovely… All i was looking for was a white tube with many thoughts in the head! But the smell gave it away before I brushed!!!!
Pepper said
You are certainly not the only one RK. We’re a big group here.
I did something similar to what you described. I used the conditioner on my hair thinking its shampoo and then wondered why it wasn’t lathering.
Fair & lovely wouldn’t have tasted too good. Lol.

Thats quite funny. Happens to me too. I once put salt instead of sugar in my tea and vanilla yogurt instead of plain in Biryani !!!!!
Pepper said
Yikes! How did the vanilla flavoured biryani taste?
Gayatri said
Oh no, I hit thumbs down to your reply by mistake and now it won’t let me change it!!!
Anyway Biryani was not as bad as I thought it would be. The spices managed to balance it a little bit. But it ended up less spicier than I like. So since then, I’ve kept my eyes WIDE open when cooking!!!!
Pepper said
Haha. That’s okay.
And wow. You managed to work around the vanilla flavour! Share the recipe sometime π
